Globally this species is widely distributed in the tropical regions of Asia. Within India it is founds in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Kaunch is a slender extensive climbing plant.
The seeds show presence of a number of bioactive subtances including tryptamine, alkylamines, steroids etc., and is also a good source of l-3,4 dihydroxyphenyl alanine (L-DOPA).

M. prurita has been found to contain L-DOPA, 40 mg/g of the plant that is a significant percentage of plant product.
