It has a automatic cutoff feature that switches of the power internally if the tap is turned off if the water temp in the tank reaches 55 deg C when the electric supply remains kept on. In case the automatic feature fails to operate for some reason and the water temp reaches further till 90 deg C power internally again will turn off.
